In my opinion I think that the poet is written to or from a previous relationship. He might also be writing about an old friend...
He is letting out his emotions that express how he's feeling.
The line "slept with you, your body has become not yours
only nor left my body mine only" indicates that they had a sexual relationship. They were intimate..
Intimate to me means being able to trust someone with everything.. Meaning he and she, or maybe he and he, we very close.
The statement " you grew up with me"
Infers that they have been childhood friends. Making the trust and connections more personal.
When we were discussing the poem in class we made the assumption that then man in the poem might me homosexual.
In the time that this was written homosexuality was not accepted by society and was looked upon a sin.
The man maybe hid is feelings and thoughts within the poem. Him explaining this to us might have been a way to release all this anger from not being accepted.
A solid first draft. How do you reconcile the the different sentences around sexuality, like the word "chaste" and the idea of being childhood friends?
